Green Gene Stocking Updates
Dear IMA and Illinois Muskie Club Members;
As you know, last fall’s donation coordinated by the IMA toward purchasing Leech Lake Population Muskellunge resulted in successful stockings in all three Project Green Gene study lakes. Thanks to your donations, we were able to get complete introductions of all three muskellunge stocks into all study reservoirs; an accomplishment that will greatly enhance the quality of this research and offer unique fishing opportunities for years to come.
I am writing to update you on the progress of the Leech Lake stockings and to share some preliminary results from this spring’s Project Green Gene sampling. Electrofishing surveys on each study reservoir this spring have found excellent survival of the Leech Lake stocking with the catch-per-unit-effort of Leech Lake fish (Upper Mississippi River Drainage Stock) equaling and/or exceeding that of each of the other two stocks. Attached you will find figures showing the relative catch-per-unit-effort of muskellunge from this years spring electrofishing surveys on each study lake. We will continue to monitor these stockings through time to follow their growth and survival.
In addition, this spring’s trap netting surveys for adult fish on Lakes Pierce and Mingo each yielded over 90 muskies from 25 to over 43 inches from multiple year-classes and stocks. We are excited by the large size of the spring sample and are in the process of analyzing and entering this data to begin preparation of the annual report.
We would like to again thank you for your continued support of this research and look forward to further collaboration in the years to come as we continue to develop and improve the muskie fishery in Illinois. Thanks!
